Artists and Architects to be "In Residence" During House+Garden Tour

In celebration of the four pillars defining the tour, a number of renowned architects, artists and landscape architects will be available at select tour houses to discuss their work. The tour program will include details on location and times when each will be available during the tour. Featured participants include:

Daniel Engelke, sculptor

Engelke, the homeowner’s father, has exhibited his works throughout the U.S. and abroad. A faculty member at Purdue University for 26 years, he is currently Professor Emeritus in Art and Design. National and international recognition has occurred through approximately 70 invitational and peer reviewed exhibitions, numerous merit awards and other honors. Engelke will be on hand to discuss the many examples of his work throughout the house.

Sam Gyulnazarian, architect

Homeowner Gyulnazarian is a decorated U.S. and international architect specializing in architecture, urban design, interior design, historic preservation, and environmental graphic design. Among many honors, he was invited to enter and was published in the 2010 Venice Biennale Catalog and received the American Institute of Architects D.C. Chapter Award of Merit the same year. Gyulnazarian completed a remodel and addition to his home in 2019.

Jennifer Horn, landscape architect

Horn is a landscape architect and horticulturist specializing in the design and implementation of high-end residential and commercial gardens throughout Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Delaware and New York. Jennifer Horn Landscape Architecture (JHLA) specializes in patios, hardscapes, outdoor kitchens and bars, fire pits, custom swimming pools and water features and other luxury landscapes. Horn will be on hand to discuss her design for a home’s garden and patio.

Tom Kerns, architect

Tom lives in this community and has practiced architecture for more than 50 years. He has done many additions to homes in Hollin Hills that embrace the Goodman aesthetic while listening to the clients’ needs. He oversaw a major remodel of the featured house in the 1980s, evidence of which is still prevalent on the first floor of the home.

Deborah Lerner and Matthew Bieschke, architectural designers

Deborah Lerner and Matthew Bieschke are the principals of Carbon Design Build (CDB). CDB has designed or constructed major renovations in Hollin Hills since the mid-2000s. Attention to detail, innovative construction methods and a collaborative mindset are core tenets of their work philosophy. They’ll be on hand to discuss their partnership in the restoration of the Alcoa House.

Andrea Mereschak Mains, landscape architect

Mains has practiced landscape architecture for 39 years, currently with the Merrifield Garden Center. Her holistic designs aim to embrace their surroundings, have meaning as well as function, and bring the user a continuum of joy as the landscape matures. Her work at the featured home extends the architecture into the garden and the garden into the house, and she’ll be on hand to discuss the design with tour goers.

Caroline Ramersdorfer, sculptor

Ramersdorfer is an Austrian-born artist. She studied philosophy in Paris and sculpture in Carrara, Italy.  Her sculpture is rooted in both disciplines. Both large and small scale, her work is a study in contrasts—tense and fluid, weighty and ethereal—and speaks to the mutability of perception and experience. Her sculpture, “Inner View Nexus,” is featured in the garden of this home.
